“屠” means “to slaughter,” and “榜” refers to “a ranking list.” Originally used by Chinese online gamers to mean that a certain gamer has beaten all the others and climbed to the top of a ranking list, this term has now been applied to various ranking lists, like those of movies and songs. It’s most frequently used when a showbiz celebrity’s new work becomes an instant success and comes on top of many ranking lists.

A: 周杰伦的新歌你听了吗?

Zhōujiélún de xīngē nǐ tīng le ma?

Have you listened to Jay Chou’s new song?

B: 是《说好不哭》吧?一发出来就屠榜了。

Shì 《shuōhǎo bùkū》ba?Yī fā chūlái jiù túbǎng le。

Are your talking about “Won’t Cry?” It became an instant success and quickly came out on top of various listings.
